Weekly Preview: Softball Hosts Southern Miss, Travels to Tulsa

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball returns to action this week with a midweek meeting and a road trip on schedule. The Green and Gold welcome Southern Mississippi on Tuesday, March 26 at Mary Bowers Field before traveling to Tulsa, Oklahoma to take on the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on March 28-30.
The Blazers come off a weekend of securing a series win over the USF Bulls, sitting at a record of 5-4 in the AAC and 14-17 overall. UAB takes on a 14-16 Southern Miss team for the first time since 2022 when the Blazers swept the Eagles in Hattiesburg. They then face the fifth-place Tulsa Golden Hurricane in AAC play for the first time since both teams were C-USA members.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Southern Miss comes off a series-clinching win over Marshall on Sunday, where the Eagles defeated the Herd 8-5. The team sits at a record of 14-16 and 3-3 in the Sun Belt Conference, with the Eagles ranked top five in sac bunts. On Sunday, catcher Hannah Borden solidified herself as the all-time home run leader at Southern Miss. Borden is tied for second in the Sun Belt in RBIs with 31, and leads the conference in homers with ten.
Other players to watch for on USM's roster include Maria Smith and Shelby Allen, who both bat over .300 with .316 and .308. Allen put a game-high 4 RBIs against Marshall on Sunday, while Smith has contributed in fielding with five assists on two different occasions. In the circle, Loganne Step leads the team in W/L with a record of 4-2. The junior righthanded pitcher struck out 31 batters throughout the season as of March 25.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN HURRICANE
Tulsa sits above the Blazers in conference play with a record of 19-11 overall and 5-4 in the American. Their most recent contest against UNT saw a sweep for the Mean Green, putting the Golden Hurricane in the middle of the pack entering the weekend series. Despite the conference losses, Tulsa has had an eventful non-conference slate, taking down Oklahoma State and Iowa State. They followed up with a sweep over Memphis, totaling 24 runs throughout the series.
The team is ranked top three in nine statistical categories throughout the AAC, including stolen bases, batting average, and runs scored. With four players batting over .300, the Golden Hurricane has two players in the top ten in batting: Imani Edwards and Claira Skaggs. In addition to batting, Maura Moore is a player to watch for in the circle, playing 76.2 innings and pitching a no-hitter versus Memphis. Striking out 61 batters on the season, she's an integral part of the Tulsa defense.
