UAB Baseball Wins First Ever AAC Game

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB baseball team got their first ever American Athletic Conference win on Friday night against Wichita State. The Blazers won a very close 5-3 contest.

Both teams retired all three batters in the first inning. Wichita State started off the scoring in the 3rd inning on a double down the left field line.

In the same inning UAB got on the board with three runs on three hits. Tyler Harrington and Nick Hollifield both hit singles to get on base, while Gavin Lewis Jr. walked. Logan Braunschweig stepped up and hit a double to left center scoring the first two runs. Gavin Lewis Jr. then scored on a Brayton Brown ground out to short.

UAB scored another two runs in the 4th inning. Nick Hollifield blasted a ball out to left field for his first home run of the year. UAB led 5-1.

In the 6th inning, Derek Williams hit a solo home run to right field for the Shockers. The ball was flying today with the wind whipping out to centerfield. Every ball that was hit had a chance of leaving the park. Wichita State hit another solo home run in the 7th, this time by Kam Durnin.

Blayze Berry made it seven innings, striking out 12 of the 21 batters he faced. He gave up all three of the Shockers earned runs.

Top Performers
Nick Hollifield found a rhythm hitting two for three with two RBIs. He hit a two run home run in the 4th inning to extend the UAB lead.
Blayze Berry pitched seven innings with 12 strikeouts and zero walks.

Game two of the series will be played tomorrow at 2 p.m.
