Gaines Named AAC Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM – Eric Gaines was named the AAC Player of the Week on Monday afternoon, the league announced. Over two UAB wins this week, Gaines averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 assists and 4.0 steals while shooting 65 percent from the field. The Player of the Week nod is the first of his career.
In UAB's win over Temple, Gaines scored 17 points and dished out 10 assists for his third career double-double. His 10 assists matched his career high.
Gaines followed up that performance by tying his career high with 22 points with six steals. With the Blazers trailing by double-digits in the second half, Gaines led the UAB comeback, scoring 14 points over the final 6:00 of the second half.
The junior guard from Lithonia, Georgia is averaging 12.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.3 steals per game. His 70 steals are tied for 14th in the nation this season and ninth in UAB history for a single season. He currently ranks 34th in the nation with 167 assists and second in the American Conference.

The Blazers will face either Memphis or the winner of the Wichita State-Rice game in the American Conference Tournament on Friday, March 15 at 2 p.m. CT at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
