Blazers Overcome Poor Shooting Night to Down Tulsa, 70-63

TULSA, Okla. – UAB men's basketball (16-8, 7-3 AAC) shot only 37.5 percent from the field but the Blazers were able to grind out a 70-63 win over Tulsa (12-11, 3-8 AAC). Javian Davis and Yaxel Lendeborg each recorded double-doubles while Eric Gaines added 17 points and seven assists.
UAB got off to a sluggish start in the first half. As a team, the Blazers shot 35.5 percent from the field and they were only 5-for-10 from the free throw line. Javian Davis, Eric Gaines and Tony Toney sparked the Blazers' offense in the first half with 20 of their 30 points.
The Blazers trailed at the half after scoring only two points over the final 3:45. Tulsa led 32-30 at the break.
In the second half, the contest remained close with neither team leading by more than four points until the 1:26 mark in the second half. Yaxel Lendeborg and Eric Gaines turned it on over the final 20 minutes. Lendeborg scored 15 of his 17 points in the final period while Eric Gaines scored 10 point and had five assists.
After Tulsa took a 55-54 lead at the 5:21 mark in the second half, Yaxel Lendeborg put the Blazers back in front with his second three of the night before Eric Gaines pushed the lead to two possessions with a midrange jumper. Lendeborg extended the lead to six with a layup at the 1:26 mark.
UAB struggled to put the game away from the free throw line initially, starting the final minute 1-for-3 from the charity stripe. The Blazers then went on to knock down the next six free throws to put the game away at 70-63.

- Yaxel Lendeborg posted his 11th double-double of the year with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals.
- Javian Davis added his third double-double of the year with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
- Eric Gaines scored 17 points and dished out seven assists. He has recorded at least seven assists in each of the last three games.
- Will Shaver scored four points over six minutes of action.
- UAB's .375 field goal percentage was its lowest during conference play.
- The Blazers attempted 25 threes in the contest, which is tied for their second most in a game this year.
