Eric Gaines Named AAC Preseason Player of the Year by The Almanac

BIRMINGHAM – The second volume of The Almanac was released for the 2023-24 basketball season this morning and Eric Gaines has been named the AAC Preseason Player of the Year by the publication.
Gaines returns to UAB after averaging 11.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in 2022-23. His 168 assists are tied for 10th in UAB history for a single season. The junior guard also made a large impact on the defensive end with 72 steals and 25 blocks.
The LSU transfer recorded two points-assists double-doubles last season against Presbyterian and Middle Tennessee. Gaines is also known for his highlight-reel athleticism, and he twice made SportsCenter's Top Ten Plays for his dunks.
The Blazers were picked to finish third in the American Athletic Conference by the Almanac and UAB was voted as "the hardest team to prepare for."
