Former UAB Standout Aaron Johnson Joins MBB Staff

BIRMINGHAM – Andy Kennedy announced the addition of Aaron Johnson to the UAB Men's Basketball staff as the Director of Player Development on Wednesday.
"We're excited to have AJ back with Blazer basketball." Head Coach Andy Kennedy said, "AJ was a great player here who has a passion and a gift for player development. Our players will benefit greatly from his insight and experience."
Johnson was a standout point guard for the Blazers for four seasons from 2007-11. He is UAB's all-time assist leader with 664 and he set the single season record of 239 during his senior season in 2010-11 while leading the NCAA. Johnson was recognized as an honorable mention AP All-American during his senior season while averaging 11.8 points and 7.7 assists per game and leading the Blazers to an at-large NCAA Tournament berth. UAB made three NIT appearances and one NCAA Tournament appearance during his career.
In 2020, Johnson became the fourth UAB men's basketball player to have his jersey number retired. His No. 1 jersey hangs in the rafters along with other Blazer legends like Jerome Mincy, Steve Mitchell and Oliver Robinson as well as legendary UAB coach and athletic director Gene Bartow.
Following his collegiate career, Johnson played professionally overseas in Italy, Finland, Romania and Poland, while also spending a season with the Bakersfield Jam of the NBA G League. He also served as a graduate assistant for two seasons on the UAB staff.
"I am happy to be back with my Blazer family." Johnson said, "College basketball is a place I really want to coach, so for Coach Kennedy to give me this opportunity is a huge honor that I plan to take full advantage of."

Season tickets for the 2023-24 UAB men's basketball season are now available starting as low as $110. Season ticket packages will feature all home games during UAB's inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference and provide the most cost-effective way to attend games at Bartow Arena.
