Big Inning Leads UAB to Sweep Jacksonville State in Mid-Week Games

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – UAB Blazers (13-27) came from behind and defeated the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (18-21) by a score of 8-6 on Tuesday, April 25 to secure the sweep over the Gamecocks.

The Blazers entered the fifth inning down by five but scored seven runs after loading the bases twice and scoring three runs on no hits then three runs off singles from Nick Hollifield and Logan Braunschweig. Jax State scored its last run in the sixth inning to bring UAB's lead to one before the Blazers scored again in the seventh after Christian Hall homered to right field.

Thomas Ballard (1-0) received his first win of the season after coming on in relief and allowed one run – earned – on two hits with two strikeouts. Braxton Shelton started on the mound for UAB and threw three complete innings and allowed five runs – earned – on six hits with a career-high strikeouts (6). Carson Knight spent an inning on the hill to allow no runs on two hits while Leo Harris closed out the game for the Blazers – Harris threw three shutout innings to earn the save for UAB.

Hollifield was the only Blazer to collect a multi-hit game after he went 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Five batters collected a hit including John Marc Mullins, Tyler Waugh, Gavin Lewis Jr., Braunschweig and Hall. Braunschweig scored a run and collected two RBI while Hall hit his fifth home run of the season.

UP NEXT
UAB will welcome No. 25 UTSA to Young Memorial Field for a three-game Conference USA series. The series begins on Friday, April 28 with first pitch scheduled for 5 P.M.
