UAB Travels to Charlotte for Weekend Series

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Blazers (12-24, 4-11) will travel to Charlotte, N.C. for a weekend series against the Charlotte 49ers (19-17, 9-5). Game one's first pitch is set for Friday, April 21 at 5 P.M.

This will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. Charlotte visited Birmingham at the end of March for a three-game series (March 31 – April 2) where the 49ers took the series even though UAB forced the rubber match after taking game two by a score of 2-1.
The Blazers will enter the weekend after having back-to-back walk-off wins over WKU and Alabama which were both secured by Henry Hunter. UAB and WKU went into extra innings tied 4-4 until Darryl Buggs drew a walk followed by a two-run homer from Hunter to secure the win. Just like the walk-off over Auburn, Hunter was given the night off against Alabama until the game entered the eleventh inning and Hunter came on to pinch hit. Logan Braunschweig served as the go-ahead run on second after reaching on a single followed by a stolen base before Hunter hit a line-drive single to first to score Braunschweig.
Charlotte is coming off a 3-2 weekend after sweeping Rice in Houston, Texas which included a 1-0 shutout and putting 16 runs on the board in game three. The 49ers dropped both of their mid-week games – at No. 14 North Carolina on Tuesday and verses Eastern Carolina at Truist Field on Wednesday. Charlotte has collected three C-USA series wins and one series split with UTSA.
UAB BLAZERS
Logan Braunschweig and Tyler Waugh lead the Blazers in batting average (.343, .321 respectfully). Three players sit tied for most hits (35) – Christian Hall, Braunschweig and Waugh. John Marc Mullins still holds the most runs scored (22). The Blazers have 34 doubles on the year with majority of those coming from Brayton Brown (8), Hall (6) and Gavin Lewis Jr. (5).
Starting Rotation:
Coach Dunn and staff will keep the same rotation this weekend – Brooks Walton, Blayze Berry and Carson Myers. Walton (2-3, 4.50 ERA) pitched six complete innings during his outing against WKU where he allowed three runs – earned – on 11 hits with no walks and two strikeouts but was given a no decision. Berry (2-2, 3.74 ERA) also was given a no decision after he threw seven complete innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts. Myers (1-3, 3.57 ERA) threw five of UAB's ten innings last Sunday and allowed four runs – earned – on seven hits and five strikeouts.
CHARLOTTE 49ERS
Charlotte is led offensively by Cam Fisher who posts the highest batting average (.368) as well as the highest slugging and on-base percentage - .824 and .521 respectfully. He also leads the team in runs (43), hits (46), home runs (17) and runs batted in (40).
Starting Rotation:
The 49ers will start with Wyatt Hudepohl on the mound Friday followed by Paxton Thompson with their Sunday starter to be determined. Hudepohl (3-4, 3.66 ERA) will make his ninth start and appearance for Charlotte. He has allowed 29 runs – 24 earned – on 54 hits with 66 strikeouts through 59 innings pitched. Thompson (4-1, 2.67 ERA) is set to make his third start and 13th appearance after having thrown 33.2 innings and has allowed 14 runs – ten earned – on 24 hits with 41 strikeouts.
UAB AND CHARLOTTE HISTORY
Dating all the way back to both program's first year as a team (1979), UAB and Charlotte have a long history. UAB leads the overall series 36-33 which includes wins in both the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA. In the last year's matchup, the 49ers swept the Blazers for the first time since 2018. On April 1 of this season, the Blazers snapped a losing streak against Charlotte after having collected their first win over the 49ers since 2019.
