BIRMINGHAM – On Tuesday afternoon, UAB men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy announced the signing of North Alabama transfer guard Daniel Ortiz. Ortiz led the Lions with 14.8 points per game while earning Second Team All-ASUN honors and leading UNA to the program's highest win total since transitioning to Division I.
"We are excited to have Daniel join our Blazer basketball family!" Head Coach Andy Kennedy said, "He is a legit shooter who can make plays with the ball which will allow him the opportunity to make an immediate impact in our backcourt. He helped lead UNA to their most wins in program history since transitioning to Division I and we are all about winning at UAB basketball!"
Ortiz played two seasons in Florence with the Lions, leading the team in scoring each year, averaging 14.6 points per game over two seasons. He scored in double figures in 45 of his 63 games with UNA with 19 games of 20 points or more and two 30-point games. He set a career high of 32 points while shooting 10-for-14 from three in the Lions' win over North Florida.
The Shreveport, Louisiana native has shown himself to be dangerous from beyond the arc. Ortiz made 105 three-pointers during the 2022-23 season while shooting at a 40.9 percent clip. Over two seasons, he recorded 20 games with at least four threes.
He showed his ability to play at a high level against tough competition in UNA's upset win at Ole Miss. Ortiz led all scorers with 22 points while shooting 6-of-11 from three. Against future AAC foe Memphis, he scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds while shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.
Ortiz is UAB's first transfer portal addition for the 2023-24 season and will join JUCO signees Chris Coleman and Alejandro Vasquez as well as high school signee KJ Satterfield on the roster.
