Softball Hosts the 2023 Green & Gold Classic

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball returns to Mary Bowers Field to host their final home tournament on schedule with the 2023 Green & Gold Classic, starting Feb. 24 and concluding Sunday, Feb. 25.
The Blazers host three teams throughout the duration of the tournament, including ULM, Butler, and Cleveland State. The first matchup begins Friday morning at 10 AM, with the Blazers taking the field at 2:30 and 4:45 PM.

SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Butler enters the 2023 season with a record of 1-10 after returning from the Panther Invitational, hosted by fellow C-USA Member FIU. The Bulldogs went 0-5 in the tournament, with two games completed in five innings.
Butler was voted to finish fourth in the Big East for their 2023 season after finishing 31-17 in 2022. The team finished second overall in the regular season with two players batting over .380. This season, the Bulldogs bat .232, with Teagan O'Rilley leading the pack with an average of .346. On the defensive, the Bulldogs average a fielding percentage of .953, with 186 putouts.

SCOUTING THE VIKINGS
Cleveland State tallied their first win over Jacksonville (Fl.) on Feb. 1 and sits at 1-4. As a team, they total 113 at-bats with 21 hits and a batting average of .186. Junior Jenna Deang leads the team in hitting with an average of .313 and an on base percentage with the same percentage.
In the circle, sophomore Melissa Holzopfel helped the Vikings to their first team win of the season, pitching 17 innings so far. In those 17 innings, she totaled 16 strikeouts. In the field, the Vikings average a fielding percentage of .952.

SCOUTING THE WARHAWKS
ULM comes off a trip to the Wilson Invitational, where they finished the tournament 2-3, with a win over Cal 5-4. Recently, they finished a matchup Feb. 22 taking on the LSU Tigers, where they lost 3-9. Just last season, the Warhawks finished 27-27 overall with a 10-17 conference record in the SunBelt.
This week, ULM's Lourdes Bacon received SunBelt Conference Player of the Week honors. Bacon hit .500, scoring seven runs and going 8-for-8 in base stealing in the week prior. Bacon leads the team in batting with .372 and hits with 16. In addition to Bacon, Ashland Ard leads the team in slugging with a percentage of .452.
