BALTIMORE, Md. – The UAB Bowling team finished fourth (4-4) out of nine total teams in the MEAC #1 this past weekend hosted by Coppin State.
The format for their first conference tournament of the season differed from past tournaments this season, with all games played being total pinfall Baker matches. The MEAC #2 on Feb. 17 in Virginia Beach, Va. hosted by Norfolk State will be played in all traditional games, and the total win-loss record after the two conference tournaments will be added up to determine which eight of the nine schools in the MEAC will participate in the MEAC Championship in Raleigh, N.C.
On Saturday, UAB Bowling went 3-2 on the day with a loss in match one to Howard (754-763), then an assertive three-straight wins over 25th ranked Morgan State (827-739), 23rd ranked Delaware State (928-838) and Monmouth - who finished as last season's conference runner-up - (863-781) in matches two, three and four respectively, before finishing the day with a loss to the fourth-ranked nationally North Carolina A&T Aggies (957-1,113) in match five.
The Blazers 957 total pins in the loss to North Carolina A&T is their third-highest total for a Baker game this season.
On Sunday, the Blazers went 1-2 on the final three matches of the tournament, with a win over Norfolk State (878-803) in match six, and then two back-to-back losses in matches seven and eight to Coppin State (766-767) and Maryland Eastern Shore (878-938). A ninth bye match was bowled for pinfall only where the Blazers recorded a 788, making their total pins for the tournament 7,639, for a 169.8 pins per game average.
UAB Bowling now looks ahead to their next tournament, which will be the Hornet Classic on Nov. 18 through Nov. 20 in Montgomery, Ala. hosted by Alabama State.
