STARKVILLE, Miss. - The UAB's women's tennis team began its 2023 Spring season at Mississippi State on Jan. 15.

The Blazers came out of the gates in doubles with Sydney Clarke and Maggie White winning on Court 1 6-3. After UAB fell on Court 3, it was down to the match on Court 2. Adela Wasserbauerova and Mackenzie White broke serve to win 6-4 and secure the doubles point.

Although the Bulldogs took all of the singles points, UAB had them on the ropes on multiple courts. Maggie White took Emmanouela Antonaki the distance on Court 1, falling in a 3-set breaker. Wasserbauerova and Mackenzie White also went three sets on Courts 2 and 4, with both dropping a hard-fought third set 7-5 against Gia Cohen and Chloé Cirotte. Annalisa Smith took the No.61 ranked player Maria Rizzolo to three sets.

"For the first match of the year, there were a lot of positives, and a lot to be excited about," said head coach Mark Tjia. "We went toe-to-toe with them from the very beginning by winning the doubles point. We played with energy and belief the entire match, which I was very pleased with. We missed a few chances in singles to capitalize in the first set which would have really turned up the pressure on them. Now we need to focus on getting better before our next match."

"We got to prove that today, because UAB came in to play and they took the doubles point from us," said Mississippi State head coach Daryl Greenan. "They did a great job. We then lost two first sets in the singles, so we knew we had a battle on our hands at that point."

The Blazers (0-1) are off until Jan. 31 when they travel to Florence to take on North Alabama. The first home match will be Feb. 12 against Georgia State at the Hoover Met. Match time is at noon.
