BIRMINGHAM - UAB will play its first official American Athletic Conference match on Saturday night at 6 p.m. on the road at No. 11/18 Charlotte. The Blazers will be facing a ranked opponent for the third time over the last four games. The 49ers will also be playing their first match as a member of the AAC.
SERIES HISTORY
Charlotte leads the all-time series 24-9-5. The Blazers have not won over the last 15 meetings between the two programs. The last time that UAB won in Charlotte was 2001.
OFFICIALLY AAC
UAB men's soccer is the first of all Blazer programs to join the American Athletic Conference. While each of the other UAB programs will join the league in 2023, men's soccer became an affiliate member for the 2022 season due to C-USA no longer supporting men's soccer.
COMMON OPPONENTS
Both the Blazers and 49ers are entering their first season as a member of the AAC. Joining UAB and Charlotte in their first season in the American is FIU and FAU.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BLAZERS
UAB fell 2-0 to No.1 Clemson on Tuesday night at home. Jack Hudson made 10 saves on the night, a season-best. Despite keeping the Tigers off the board in the first half, the defending national champions broke through in the second half with a pair of goals.
SCOUTING THE 49ERS
Charlotte boasts a high-powered offensive attack. Through five games, the 49ers have scored 22 goals. Four different players have found the back of the net at least three times on the season. At the same time, Charlotte has allowed only one goal on the season with Thomas Wallis in goal. Wallis has not conceded a goal since the opening half of the season.
RETURNING PRODUCTION
The Blazers return three of their top four goal scorers from the 2021 campaign in Nathaniel St. Louis, Brooks Rice and Curtis DeLeon. Also returning is Teodor Thorvaldsen who led the team with four assists.
WE'RE ALL FROM SOMEWHERE
UAB men's soccer has student-athletes from six states and eight different countries (Norway, Canada, Germany, Spain, Israel, Hungary, Austria). Alabama is the most well-represented state with nine Blazers and Norway is the most well-represented country outside of the U.S. with three players (Thorvaldsen, Love Groth, Overland).
LOTS OF NEW FACES
UAB brings in many new faces for the 2022 season. The Blazers added 19 newcomers during the offseason to add depth to the rotation.
THE VETERANS
Brooks Rice, Nathaniel St. Louis and Curtis DeLeon have led the way for UAB so far on the offensive end. Rice leads the team with five points (2 G, 1 A) while St. Louis has found the back of the net twice. DeLeon leads the Blazers with three assists so far on the year.
TOUGH SCHEDULE
Five of the Blazers' opponents on the 2022 schedule are currently ranked in the Top 25 of the Top Drawer Soccer or United Soccer Coaches rankings while another is receiving votes.
