UAB Men’s Basketball Releases Full 2022-23 Schedule

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy released the Blazers' full 2022-23 schedule on Thursday morning. The 31-game slate features 11 nonconference matchups and 20 Conference USA matchups, highlighted by all 17 home games being played in Bartow Arena.
"As we embark on our final season in Conference USA, we look forward to playing all C-USA opponents both at home and on the road," Kennedy said. "It is the only way to truly determine a regular season champion."
UAB, the defending Conference USA Tournament champions, released its 11-game nonconference schedule on Monday morning. Highlights of the nonconference schedule include home games against South Alabama and South Carolina in December. The Blazers will also face off against Toledo in a neutral site matchup, travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, for the Sunshine Slam and face their first true road matchup of the 2022-23 season at West Virginia on Dec. 10.
UAB's conference schedule opens on Dec. 22 against Charlotte, kicking off a three-game homestand to open C-USA play. The Blazers' conference slate ends with four of its final five games on the road, bookending their regular season schedule at Charlotte on March 4.
Before the start of the 2022-23 regular season, the Blazers will host Mississippi College for an exhibition game on Nov. 1.
UAB's regular-season opener against Alabama State is scheduled for Nov. 7. The Blazers hold a perfect 7-0 record against the Hornets, winning the most recent matchup 71-63 back on Dec. 21, 2019.
The Blazers will then face one of their toughest tests of nonconference play with a neutral site matchup against Toledo. The Rockets, who made an NIT appearance in 2021-22, finished 26-8 this past season and won the Mid-American Conference regular season title for the second straight year. Nov. 11's meeting between the Blazers and Rockets in Philadelphia will be the first between the two schools.
UAB will then return home for a matchup against Presbyterian (Nov. 16) before heading to Daytona Beach, Florida, for the Sunshine Slam (Nov. 21-22). The two-day tournament at Daytona Beach's Ocean Center will feature a four-team field – UAB, Georgia, USF and Saint Joseph's. Official matchups for the Thanksgiving week tournament will be announced at a future time.
UAB holds a 38-21 advantage in the all-time series against USF. The Blazers are also 1-0 against Saint Joseph's and 1-3 against Georgia.
The Blazers will then return to Bartow Arena for three straight home games, hosting Rhodes (Nov. 26), Jacksonville (Nov. 30) and South Alabama (Dec. 4). UAB is 30-14 against South Alabama in 44 prior matchups, including a 17-2 edge in games played in Birmingham. The Blazers' first game of December will mark the first matchup between the Blazers and Jaguars since Dec. 8, 2012, when UAB defeated South Alabama 92-78 in Bartow Arena.
UAB will then play its first true road game of the 2022-23 season when the Blazers travel to Morgantown, West Virginia, for a game at West Virginia on Dec. 10. UAB is 2-2 against West Virginia and 0-1 in Morgantown. The Mountaineers pulled off a late rally in this past year's matchup to defeat UAB 65-59 at Legacy Arena. Kennedy was an assistant coach under current West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins at Cincinnati from 2001-05.
After its trip to West Virginia, UAB will close out its nonconference slate against South Carolina (Dec. 14) and Southern (Dec. 18). UAB's home matchup against the Gamecocks will mark the first time since the 2016-17 season that the Blazers have hosted an SEC opponent at Bartow Arena.
The Blazers are 1-3 against South Carolina, winning the first matchup in the series 83-54 on Feb. 8, 1986, in Birmingham. South Carolina held off a late UAB rally in this past season's matchup in Columbia, South Carolina, hanging on for a 66-63 victory at Colonial Life Arena.
UAB's nonconference finale against Southern will mark the seventh meeting between the two schools. The Blazers hold a 6-0 advantage, winning all but one of the matchups by double digits.
UAB will open Conference USA play on Dec. 22 against Charlotte. The Blazers will then face UTEP (Dec. 29) and UTSA (Dec. 31) to close out 2022 in Bartow Arena. UAB posted a perfect 4-0 record against the Miners and Roadrunners this past season. Kennedy also notched his 300th career victory with an 87-59 win over UTSA on New Year's Day in 2022.
The Blazers will then play four of their next five conference games on the road, opening 2023 at Florida Atlantic (Jan. 5) and FIU (Jan. 7). UAB posted a perfect 3-0 record against the Florida schools this past season, which included notching an 80-66 victory over FAU in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Tournament.
UAB returns home to Bartow Arena on Jan. 11 to host WKU before facing off against Louisiana Tech (Jan. 14) and Middle Tennessee (Jan. 16) on the road. The Blazers knocked off Middle Tennessee and LA Tech in the semifinals and finals of this past year's conference tournament, respectively, en route to their sixth conference tournament title in program history.
The Blazers then play four of their next five games in Bartow Arena, opening the stretch against defending C-USA regular season champion North Texas on Jan. 21. The Mean Green advanced to the second round of the NIT this past season.
UAB will then host Louisiana Tech (Jan. 26) before making a quick road trip to Rice on Jan. 28. The Blazers then host both Florida schools when Florida Atlantic (Feb. 2) and FIU (Feb. 4) travel to Bartow Arena.
Five of UAB's final seven regular season games will take place on the road – at North Texas (Feb. 9), at UTEP (Feb. 16), at UTSA (Feb. 18), at WKU (Feb. 25) and at Charlotte (March 4). The visiting team has won the past eight matchups in the tightly contested series between the Blazers and Mean Green.
Jordan Walker, the reigning Conference USA Player of the Year, drilled a game-winning 3-pointer to defeat WKU 68-65 at E.A. Diddle Arena this past season. UAB rallied from multiple deficits in the second half to win in El Paso in 2021-22, making a defensive stop in the closing seconds to secure a 69-66 victory.
UAB's final two home games of the regular season come against Middle Tennessee (Feb. 11) and Rice (Feb. 23). Walker set a new UAB single-game scoring record with 42 points in this past year's Bartow Classic victory over the Blue Raiders, blowing past Middle Tennessee 97-75 in Bartow Arena. The Blazers posted a wire-to-wire victory over Rice in Bartow Arena on Feb. 17, cruising to a 92-68 win.
Walker, Trey Jemison, Tavin Lovan and KJ Buffen, all key contributors to UAB's Conference USA Tournament championship run in March, will return for the Blazers in 2022-23.
UAB also added seven new Blazers to the 2022-23 roster, five of which were from the transfer portal. Eric Gaines (LSU), Javian Davis (Mississippi State), Ledarrius and Ty Brewer (ETSU), and Tyler Bertram (Binghamton) comprise the five student-athletes UAB and Kennedy have added through the transfer portal since March 30. The Blazers also added in-state high school standout Efrem Johnson and walk-on Seth Sigmon to the 2022-23 roster.
