UAB (28-21, 11-15 C-USA) trailed FIU 8-1 in the seventh inning, but rallied all the way back with four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to take a 9-8 lead heading into the ninth inning. However, the Panthers plated five in ninth for a 13-9 advantage.
The Panthers (16-30, 8-18 C-USA) would need all five of those runs as UAB scored three runs in the ninth, but UAB was unable to complete its second comeback of the day as FIU secured the series victory.
The two teams combined for 32 hits as each had 16 apiece. John Marc Mullins was 4-for-5, while Henry Hunter was 3-for-4. Christian Hall drove in a game-high four runs.
FIU scored three runs in the first, one in the third, two in the fifth and two in the sixth, and took an 8-1 lead into a 50-minute rain delay.
After the delay, UAB rallied in the seventh as their four runs came on a two-RBI single from Hall and a two-RBI triple from Caleb Floyd.
The bats stayed hot in the eighth as UAB continued to chip away. Following a Henry Hunter single and a fielding error which allowed him to advance to second, Darryl Buggs roped an RBI single to score Hunter, bringing the score to 8-6 in favor of FIU.
Hall then tied the game with a two-RBI double to right center which scored Buggs and Mullins to tie the game.
Josh Sears put UAB ahead for the first time with an RBI single which scored pinch runner Gavin Lewis Jr. for a 9-8 lead.
However, a bases-loaded clearing double for FIU's Adrian Figueroa was followed by a two-run home run from Mario Zabala as the Panthers regained the lead at 13-9.
The Blazers had one final rally with three runs in the bottom of the ninth but FIU was able to close out the game for a wild 13-12 victory.
The Blazers and Panthers conclude the three game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. It is Senior Day for 10 Blazers who will be playing their final home game at Young Memorial Field.
