BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team will conclude its 2022 home schedule this weekend with a three-game series against FIU. The Blazers will honor their 10 seniors before Sunday's game for Senior Day at Young Memorial Field.
Friday's series opener is set for 6 p.m., while Saturday's matchup is set for 2 p.m. Both games will stream live on CUSA.tv. First pitch for Sunday's home finale is set for 1 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
With only two Conference USA weekend series remaining, UAB (28-19, 11-13 C-USA) holds a two-game edge on Marshall for the eighth and final spot in the Conference USA Tournament, which will be played in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from May 25-29. The Blazers hold a 16-9 record at Young Memorial Field this season, winning its last home conference series against No. 4 Southern Miss from April 29 to May 1.
The Blazers return to Birmingham after posting a 3-2 record on their recent road trip, winning midweek games at Jacksonville State and Alabama State while winning one game out of three at WKU this past weekend. In Tuesday's win at Alabama State, the Blazers scored four runs in the top of the 11th to pull away from the Hornets in extra innings, improving to 7-3 in midweek games this season.
First-year head coach Casey Dunn needs just one victory to surpass a UAB head coaching record for wins as a first-year head coach. Dunn's team also sits just two victories shy of the 30-win mark, which UAB last reached in 2015 when the Blazers finished with a 33-25 record and advanced to the Conference USA Tournament championship game. The Blazers fell 8-2 to this weekend's opponent, FIU, at Southern Miss' Pete Taylor Park on May 24, 2015.
Offensively, six Blazers with over 100 at-bats are batting over .280, highlighted by designated hitter Christian Hall's .370 clip this season. Hall continues to lead UAB in batting average (.370), OPS (1.026), slugging percentage (.591) and on-base percentage (.435). Josh Sears also reached 50 RBI on the season with a three-run home run on Tuesday, notching his team-best 13th homer of the season.
The Blazers will once again send Jackson Reynolds (Friday), Leo Harris (Saturday) and Brooks Walton (Sunday) to the mound this weekend. Harris pitched a career-high eight innings, allowing just six hits with six strikeouts and no walks in this past Saturday's 7-1 win over the Hilltoppers. As a staff, UAB ranks third in Conference USA with a 4.44 ERA.
FIU (14-30, 6-18 C-USA) won the opening game of its weekend series against Middle Tennessee this past weekend, earning a 5-4 win in Miami. The Panthers rank last in Conference USA with a .244 batting average and a 7.05 team ERA. FIU, however, leads the all-time series 11-8 with a 6-3 record in Birmingham.
