BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team dropped the opening contest of a three game series with FIU by the score of 6-5 on Friday night at Young Memorial Field.
Despite drawing 13 walks, the Blazers left 14 runners on base and fell to 12-6 in one run games.
The loss drops UAB to 28-20 overall and 11-14 in league play. FIU is now 15-30 overall and 7-18 in C-USA.
John Marc Mullins got the Blazers off to a fast start with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first. His fourth homer of the season gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead.
FIU tallied three hits in the top of the second, including a two-RBI single from Jayden Melendez which moved the Panthers ahead 2-1.
Mullins stayed hot in his second at-bat and his RBI single scored Matthew Golda who walked to lead off the inning.
The game remained tied until the top of the fifth when FIU scored two runs to gain a 4-2 lead. The first run of the inning was a solo homer from nine-hole hitter Noel Perez, and the other run came on a fielding error which allowed Alec Sanchez to score from second base.
UAB threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth, but a few base running errors resulted in outs at third base and then at home plate to end the threat as FIU maintained a 4-2 lead.
The Blazers surged ahead with three runs in the seventh. The first run came courtesy of a sac fly from Matthew Golda which scored Josh Sears who walked and was moved to third on a double from Logan Braunschweig.
The next batter was Henry Hunter who absolutely crushed a two-run homer to straight away center field to give the Blazers a 5-4 advantage. His sixth home run of the season also scored Braunschweig.
However, the Panthers rallied with an unearned run in the eighth to tie the game and a two-out single in the ninth to take a 6-5 lead. The game winning RBI came off the bat of Adrian Figueroa.
