BIRMINGHAM – First baseman Josh Sears drove in six runs and the UAB baseball team recorded a 14-4 victory over FIU in eight innings on Senior Day at Young Memorial Field.
With the win, UAB improves to 29-21 overall and the 29 wins for Casey Dunn are the most by a first year head coach in program history.
UAB (29-21, 12-15 C-USA) also clinched a berth in the Conference USA Tournament as the eight-seed and will be playing in the postseason for the first time since 2018.
The Blazers scored their 14 runs on 10 hits, led by Sears who was 3-for-5 with those six runs driven in and two runs scored. Leadoff batter John Marc Mullins concluded his outstanding series by going 1-for-2 today with three walks and three runs scored. He finished the series 7-of-12 (.583) with six runs, two RBI and five walks.
FIU scored one run on four hits in the top of the first inning, but the Blazers then took control of game with five runs in the third inning.
The big hit of the frame came on Sears' 14th home run of the year which scored three runs. UAB then added two unearned runs on a double steal which FIU catcher Matthew Gonzalez threw into left field, allowing Caleb Floyd to score, followed by a fielding error on the first baseman which allowed Henry Hunter to cross the plate.
The Panthers added a second run in the top of the fourth, but the Blazers responded with two runs in the bottom half courtesy of a passed ball and a groundout, making the score 7-2.
FIU inched closer with two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Dante Girardi and heads up base running by Mario Zabala who scored from second as UAB was trying to turn a double play.
However, that would be all the scoring for FIU as UAB added two runs in the bottom of the sixth and five in the eighth to conclude the game. It is a Conference USA rule that if a team is up by 10 runs after seven innings on travel day that the game is over. Matthew Golda's two-RBI single ended the contest.
Starting pitcher Brooks Walton picked up his sixth win of the season by going 5.2 innings and allowing four runs (two earned).
UAB has one final midweek game on Tuesday at Troy, followed by concluding the regular season at UTSA.
