UAB (25-17, 10-11 C-USA) trimmed its deficit to one run in the bottom of the sixth when Caleb Floyd blasted his second opposite-field home run of the weekend, making it a 4-3 ballgame with nobody out in the sixth. Southern Miss (34-10, 17-4 C-USA), however, would respond in the top of the seventh, plating five runs on six hits and two UAB errors to take a 9-3 lead entering the seventh-inning stretch.
The Blazers struck first for the first time in this weekend's series when Floyd delivered a two-out RBI single to right field in the opening inning, bringing home Logan Braunschweig from second base to take a 1-0 lead. After two more scoreless frames from UAB starter Brooks Walton in the second and third, Southern Miss jumped ahead for good when Christopher Sargent and Danny Lynch hit a solo home run and a two-run homer, respectively, with one out in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles stretched their lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth when a single from Dustin Dickerson drove home Gabe Montenegro for an unearned run. UAB tallied a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings, making it 4-2 in the fifth when John Marc Mullins sprinted home from third base on a wild pitch from Southern Miss starting pitcher Hurston Waldrep. Floyd's opposite-field home run to open the bottom of the sixth would then make it 4-3.
Collin Taylor worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth in Sunday's setback, striking out a pair of Golden Eagles for a scoreless inning of relief. Tyler O'Clair also worked a perfect inning in the ninth with a pair of strikeouts, sitting down the top of Southern Miss' lineup in order.
The Blazers pushed three runs across in the ninth to put the tying run in the on-deck circle. After a leadoff walk from Tyler Waugh, Mullins ripped a double past the Golden Eagle first baseman to put runners at second and third with one down in the final frame. Braunschweig then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Waugh from third to make it a 9-4 game.
Josh Sears would trim Southern Miss' advantage to 9-5 when he doubled down the left-field line, scoring Mullins from third base. Brandon Willoughby then singled with two outs in the ninth to keep the rally alive as Sears scored from second on an error from USM's left fielder. Southern Miss' Landon Harper then recorded the final out of the game, inducing a groundout from Floyd to shortstop.
Three Blazers – Braunschweig, Sears, Floyd and Darryl Buggs – tallied multi-hit performances on Sunday. Floyd led the Blazers with two RBI, surpassing 30 runs batted in for the season.
UAB will open its five-game road trip Tuesday night with an in-state matchup at Jacksonville State. Tuesday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
