JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The UAB baseball team used a five-run eighth inning to pull away from Jacksonville State in Tuesday night's 7-1 victory over the Gamecocks at Jim Case Stadium.
UAB (26-17, 10-11 C-USA) carried a 2-1 lead into the top of the eighth before the Blazers scored five runs on four hits and two Jacksonville State errors to expand its lead to 7-1. Josh Sears reached via a throwing error on the shortstop before Brandon Willoughby singled to left field to put a pair of runners on for Caleb Floyd. Floyd flied out to center field, moving Sears to third to put runners at the corners.
Designated hitter Tyler Waugh then broke the game open, singling to shortstop to score Sears from third. On Waugh's single, a throwing error helped Willoughby score all the way from first base on the play, making it 4-1 Blazers with just one out in the frame.
After a fielder's choice helped the Gamecocks put two down in the inning, Darryl Buggs doubled down the left-field line to keep UAB's inning alive, scoring Matthew Golda from second to make it 5-1. Logan Braunschweig then smacked a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded to bring the game to its final score at 7-1.
UAB's bullpen dominated Jacksonville State (21-22) after an effective spot start from JC Sewell, allowing just one run and four hits over 7.1 innings of work in relief. Tyler O'Clair kept the Blazers in front after Jacksonville State scored in the bottom of the third, allowing just one hit in three scoreless innings of work from the fourth inning to the sixth inning.
Jonah Smith, Collin Taylor and Carson Myers shut down the Gamecocks in the final three frames, allowing just one hit over the final third of the game. Taylor, who leads the Blazers with eight saves this season, struck out a pair of batters in the eighth to preserve UAB's newly earned six-run lead.
UAB struck first in Tuesday night's game, plating a run in the top of the first when Floyd drove in John Marc Mullins on a fielder's choice. Mullins, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the victory, then sparked UAB's second scoring opportunity of the ballgame with a leadoff double in the third. After Braunschweig moved him over to third with a groundout to the right side of the infield, Sears brought home Mullins with an RBI groundout to third base to make it 2-0 UAB.
Sewell, who made his first start of the season on Tuesday, earned his first pitching victory of the year after going 2.1 innings while allowing just two hits with a pair of strikeouts. He becomes the 11th Blazer to notch a pitching win in 2022.
Tuesday's win also snapped UAB's eight-game losing streak to the Gamecocks, marking the Blazers' first win over Jacksonville State since 2014.
UAB will continue its five-game road trip Friday when the Blazers open a three-game series at WKU (14-29, 5-16 C-USA). Friday's first pitch has been moved up to 5 p.m. in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
