BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team fell in both games of a hard fought doubleheader versus North Texas on Friday afternoon. The Blazers (21-23, 9-10) took early leads in both games, but the Mean Green (30-12, 16-5) got late runs in two straight games to take the doubleheader.
GAME 1
After three scoreless innings, the Blazers scored the first run of the day when Bella Wiggins crossed home plate due to a UNT fielding error in the bottom of the fourth. After forcing the Mean Green to strand two batters on base in the top of the fifth, UAB added a run on a Lauren Brock RBI to take a 2-0 lead. North Texas tied the game with a sacrifice RBI and an RBI single at the top of the sixth. After UAB couldn't score in the bottom of the sixth, the Mean Green took the lead with an RBI single at the top of the seventh. The Blazers had a final chance to tie it up, but went three up, three down to end the game 3-2 in favor of UNT.
Bailey Tindell (2-6) was on the hook for the pitching loss in relief. Sarah Cespedes struck out six batters in 5.2 innings of work.
GAME 2
In the second game of the day, UAB started fast, forcing UNT to go three up, three down in the top of the first, and scoring three runs on a Tyler Armistead RBI single, a Sierra Frazier RBI single, and a UNT wild pitch that allowed Frazier to score. After keeping North Texas off the scoreboard at the top of the second, UAB added another run in the bottom of the second on a Lauren Brock RBI that scored Lindsey Smith, and gave UAB a 4-0 lead. UNT loaded the bases in the top of the third, but an impressive double play from the Blazers kept the Mean Green off the scoreboard.
After UAB couldn't score in the bottom of the third, UNT got on the board with a leadoff solo home run to left center field at the top of the fourth. UAB left two runners stranded in the bottom of the fourth, and UNT did the same at the top of the fifth. After UAB went 0-3 in the bottom of the fifth, North Texas added another run with a home run to right field at the top of the sixth. The Blazers couldn't get on base in the bottom of the sixth. North Texas then took the lead with a 3 RBI double to right field. The Blazers had one last chance to score, but left a runner stuck on first, and the game ended 5-4.
Sarah Cespedes (9-7) was attributed the loss in the circle. UAB deployed four pitchers in total during the contest.
