Softball Wins Final Game of UNT Series

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team got a much needed victory today versus North Texas in the final game of a three-game series.
It was the Mean Green (30-13, 15-6) who struck first today, getting on base with a lead-off double, and a sac-fly that gave UNT a 1-0 lead. After UAB (22-23, 10-10) left two stranded on base in the bottom of the first, both teams went down in order in the second inning. There was no scoring in the third inning. North Texas was threatening at the top of the fourth, but a Blazer double play, and a crafty throw by Sierra Frazier to catch a UNT runner attempting to steal second base left the Mean Green scoreless.
The Blazers took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with a Jolie Readeaux RBI bunt single and a Lindsey Smith RBI double. The game deadlocked in the fifth, and each squad left a runner stranded on base without any runs. UNT got a runner on base at the top of the sixth, but Sarah Cespedes got a swinging strikeout to deny the scoring opportunity. After UAB couldn't add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, UNT had their final chance to tie the game, but the UAB fielding stood its ground and forced UNT to go three up, three down, and the Blazers won 2-1.
Olivia Valbak (4-7) picked up the pitching win, she struck out three batters in five innings of work. Sarah Cespedes was awarded her second save of the season, allowing no hits over the last two innings of the game. Lindsey Smith and Faith Hegh each hit a double today. Tyler Armistead stole a base. Armistead is a perfect 8-8 on the season for stolen bases.
The Blazers will be in action this Wednesday at cross-town rival Samford. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
