Ertel Named to Conference USA All-Academic Team

DALLAS – UAB graduate guard Michael Ertel was named to the 2022 Conference USA Men's Basketball All-Academic Team on Tuesday morning.
Ertel, a graduate guard from Indianapolis, Indiana, becomes the Blazers' first C-USA All-Academic Team honoree since Nick Norton in 2016. He holds a 3.87 GPA as he pursues a master's degree in communication management.
The second-year UAB guard was named a C-USA Academic Medalist and earned a spot on the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll in his first year at UAB in 2021. Ertel has reached double figures in scoring 36 times as a Blazer, earning a spot on the Conference USA All-Championship Team in 2021 after a strong finish to the year a season ago.
Ertel also surpassed 2,000 points for his college basketball career in UAB's win at UTSA on Feb. 24. He has scored 20 or more points four times this season, including back-to-back 20-point performances to conclude the regular season. His 25 points in UAB's C-USA opener against UTEP on Dec. 30 was his most as a Blazer, helping lead UAB to a 75-62 victory.
After winning its final four games to conclude the regular season, Ertel and the Blazers will open postseason play Thursday night at the Conference USA Men's Basketball Championships in Frisco, Texas. UAB, who is the No. 2 seed in the C-USA's West Division, is scheduled to play at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 10, at the Ford Center at The Star.
