UAB Hosts LA Tech for Senior Day

BIRMINGHAM – After polishing off a three-game road sweep with an 81-68 victory at Southern Miss on Wednesday, the UAB men's basketball team returns to Bartow Arena for Senior Day on Saturday against Louisiana Tech. The Blazers will honor their three seniors before Saturday's game – Justin Brown, Michael Ertel and Quan Jackson.
With a win at Southern Miss on Wednesday, UAB (23-7, 13-4 C-USA) clinched the No. 2 seed in Conference USA's West Division and a double bye in next week's C-USA Tournament in Frisco, Texas. LA Tech (21-8, 12-5 C-USA) sits just one spot behind the Blazers in the West Division standings and is locked into the No. 3 seed in the West for next week's championships.
UAB is 9-9 against Louisiana Tech with the Blazers holding a 7-2 advantage in the series in games played in Birmingham. The Bulldogs, however, left Birmingham with a victory in their most recent trip to Bartow Arena, earning a 72-58 road win on Jan. 25, 2020.
UAB LATELY
UAB (23-7, 13-4 C-USA) registered an 81-68 win at Southern Miss on Wednesday, flipping an early 7-4 deficit into a 16-9 lead over just 3:07. The Blazers never trailed again, extending their lead to as many as 22 points in the road triumph. Michael Ertel recorded his second 20-point performance of the season, going 6-of-8 from behind the 3-point line to help UAB outscore the Golden Eagles 28-1 in bench points. The Blazers exceled from behind the 3-point line in Wednesday's victory, going 12-of-20 (60%) with four Blazers knocking down a triple. Jordan Walker again topped the Blazers in scoring with 21 points, while center Trey Jemison posted a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with eight points as UAB dominated the Golden Eagles 44-33 on the glass.

Louisiana Tech (21-8, 12-5 C-USA) notched a 67-54 victory over Old Dominion on Senior Night earlier this week. The Bulldogs are 3-2 in their past five games, falling to UTEP and North Texas by a combined 10 points. LA Tech continues to feature a versatile scoring attack with five players averaging double figures, highlighted by star power forward Kenneth Lofton, Jr. The second-year player leads LA Tech in points per game (16.3), rebounds per game (10.5), total steals (35) and total blocks (23). As a team, Louisiana Tech ranks first in Conference USA in defensive rebounds per game (27.07) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.31), assists per game (14.7), free throws made (404), scoring offense (77.0) and fewest turnovers committed per game (11.3).

In the first matchup between the Blazers and Bulldogs, UAB snapped LA Tech's 18-game home winning streak and earned its first win in Ruston in program history. Jordan Walker was the story of UAB's win in Ruston on Jan. 22, pouring in a then career-high 36 points and tying a UAB school record with nine 3-pointers made in the key C-USA victory. KJ Buffen also shined in UAB's win in the Thomas Assembly Center, finishing with 11 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. With a dunk in the first half of a 24-point win over Rice on Feb. 17, KJ Buffen became the sixth current Blazer to join the 1,000-point club. Buffen, Jordan Walker and Justin Brown have all three surpassed 1,000 points in their college careers with the Blazers this season. Buffen (1,052), Walker (1,126) and Brown (1,039) are joined by fellow Blazers Mike Ertel (2,033), Quan Jackson (1,759) and Tavin Lovan (1,237) to have scored more than 1,000 points in their college basketball careers. UAB is the only known program in Division I with six 1,000-point scorers. Notre Dame and Florida each both have five 1,000-point scorers on their rosters.

Blazer men's basketball games are set to air on 100.5 ESPN JOX 2 with David Crane and Murry Bartow on the call.
In addition, Crane will host Blazer Sportsline every Tuesday beginning Dec. 28. The show takes place live from Iron City Grill in downtown Birmingham and features men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy and women's basketball head coach Randy Norton.
