UAB Splits Friday Doubleheader with Belmont

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team split its Friday doubleheader with Belmont in a pair of one-run games at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers fell in game one, 2-1, but bounced back with a 9-8 decision in game two. UAB is 10-4 on the season, while Belmont is 12-4.
GAME ONE – BELMONT 2, UAB 1
Jackson Reynolds (1-1) got the start in the series opener. Reynolds tossed 6.0 innings, allowing six hits with two runs and four strikeouts.
The Blazers were held to four hits in the contest with Christian Hall, Caleb Floyd, Peyton Puckett and Darryl Buggs all recording one.
Belmont opened the scoring in the second inning. With runners on second and third, and RBI groundout scored the first run of the contest. In the next at bat, Jack Capobianco hit a single that brought in the second run of the inning to take the 2-0 lead.
Buggs broke up the no hitter in the third inning with a single up the middle. The Blazers couldn't bring Buggs around to leave the score at 2-0.
After a leadoff walk in the sixth, back-to-back groundouts put John Marc Mullins on third with two outs. Hall hit a single to bring Mullins home to cut the Belmont lead to one, 2-1.
Collin Taylor came in to pitch for Reynolds in the top of the seventh and held the Bruin batters hitless. However, the Blazer couldn't put together a rally and the game ended with a final score of 2-1.
GAME TWO – UAB 9, BELMONT 8
Buggs highlighted game two, going 2-for-4 with six RBIs. Buggs is the first Blazer since 2015 to record six RBIs in a contest.
Freshman Carson Myers (2-1) picked up his second win of the season after pitching 2.0 innings, allowing no hits and recording three strikeouts. Jonah Smith (1) earned his first save of the season.
Belmont led off the scoring in the second inning, driving in a pair of runs to take the 2-0 lead.
The Blazers tied up the game in the bottom of the third on a Josh Sears two-run homer that hit off the batter's eye in center field.
The Bruins retook the lead in the fourth with four runs on three hits for the 6-2 advantage.
With bases loaded in the fifth, Puckett drew a walk. Buggs came up to the plate and sent his first career home run out to left field to take the first lead of the game at 7-6. Buggs' grand slam is the first for UAB since Ian Ladner hit one versus Miami (OH) in 2020.
Belmont took its second lead of the game in the sixth inning at 8-7.
Buggs came up with bases loaded again and hit a single to center field to drive in two runs to take the lead again at 9-8.
Belmont had an opportunity to tie the game, but Smith game in and got the final three outs to secure the 9-8 win.
The Blazers are back on the diamond on Sunday for the series finale versus Belmont. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
