UAB Tops Belmont in Series Finale, 6-3

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team secured its fourth straight series win in a 6-3 victory over Belmont on Sunday afternoon. The Blazers took 2-of-3 games in the series to improve to 11-4 on the season.
Brooks Walton (3-0) earned his third win of the season after tossing 6.2 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Collin Taylor collected his first save of the season after coming in with a runner on in the ninth.
UAB opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. John Marc Mullins led off with a double and was later brought in on a Josh Sears sac fly to take the 1-0 lead.
Belmont tied it up in the top of the third on a solo home run out to right.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Peyton Puckett hit a double out to right center field. Puckett was driven in on an RBI single in the next at bat by Darryl Buggs to retake the lead, 2-1. After a stolen base by Buggs, John Marc Mullins hit a single through the left side to add an insurance run at 3-1.
The Bruins made it a one-run game again in the top of the seventh, 3-2.
Christian Hall hit a two-run homer out to right field in the seventh to extend its lead to 5-2. The long ball marked Hall's third home run of the season. The Blazers brought in another run in the inning on a single by Buggs for the four-run advantage, 6-2.
Belmont brought in a run in the eighth on a passed ball, cutting the lead to 6-3.
The Bruins had a runner on with no outs in the ninth, but Taylor came in to retire the final three batters with three strikeouts for the 6-3 win.
The Blazers are back on the diamond on Tuesday to close out their nine game homestand with a midweek matchup with Jacksonville State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
