UAB Softball Opens C-USA Play in Miami Versus FIU

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team is headed south to play FIU in a three-game series this weekend, March 11-13. These games will serve as UAB's Conference USA opener. Friday's game will be at 6:00 p.m. ET, as well as Saturday's, and Sunday's game will be at noon ET.
UAB LATELY:
The Blazers (12-9) are looking to begin conference play on a high note, and they will rely on their deep roster to do so. Lilly Crowe leads the Blazers in home runs with 4, and RBIs with 16. Sarah Cespedes (6-1) is the Blazers go-to pitcher, she has collected 27 strikeouts on the year. Olivia Valbak (1-3) leads the team in strikeouts with 37 and has also had a strong year playing shortstop. Tyler Armistead has 4 stolen bases on the year. Ten different true freshmen have appeared in games this season for Joe Guthrie's squad, with six of them recording starts. Lindsey Smith has started all 21 games at third base. Fellow freshman Bella Wiggins leads the team in batting average with a .354 mark.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS:
FIU (14-10) will be looking to defend their home field, and will lean on the talents of junior outfielder Madison Lewis. Lewis leads her team in RBIs, (15) slugging percentage, (.517) and triples (2).
Kendahl Dunford (4-3) is the Panther's top choice in the circle, with 59 strikeouts on the year, to go with a 3.38 ERA. 14 Panthers currently hold perfect fielding percentages.
This will be the first meeting between FIU and UAB since 2016. UAB holds the series lead 6-5.
