BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball senior guard Jordan Walker was one of 50 players nationally named to the 2023 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Men's Player of the Year watch list, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Monday.
In Walker's first season at UAB, he was named Conference USA Player of the Year after averaging 20.3 points and 4.9 assists per game. One of the premiere point guards in the nation, "Jelly" was one of only three players in Division I to average at least 20 points and 4.5 assists per game (Tavian Dunn-Martin and Scotty Pippen Jr.). His 690 points are the second most in a single season in UAB history. Entering the season, the Blazers had not reached an NCAA Tournament since 2015. Walker's performance during the Conference USA Tournament helped the Blazers end that drought. During the tournament, he averaged 31 points per game, including a 40-point performance against Middle Tennessee.
Walker is one of only nine returning players to average 20 points per game or more during the 2021-22 season. He finished third nationally with 116 three-pointers and 14th in points scored (690). During the season, "Jelly" scored at least 20 points in 18 games. He was the only player in Conference USA to score at least 30 points in three games. Walker recorded a pair of 40-point performances, both against Middle Tennessee. His 42 points during the regular season against MTSU marked a new single-game UAB record, surpassing current UAB head coach Andy Kennedy's previous record of 41.
"Jelly" earned C-USA Preseason Player of the Year honors for the 2022-23 season and he was named to the Bob Cousy Award watchlist, awarded to the top point guard in the country.
The Blazers open the 2022-23 season on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. against Alabama State in Bartow Arena.
