UAB MBB Set for Sunshine Slam

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – UAB men's basketball (2-1) is set to open play at the Greenlight Sunshine Slam presented by Discount Tire on Monday evening against South Florida (0-4) on Monday at 5 p.m. CT. The Blazers will then take on either St. Joseph's or Georgia on Tuesday.

ALL-TIME SERIES
UAB leads the all-time series over South Florida 38-21. The two teams have played four games at neutral sites and split the meetings. The Blazers took the last meeting in 2016.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blazers defeated Presbyterian 92-61 in the on-campus portion of the Sunshine Slam. Eric Gaines led the way with 16 points and 10 assists. Eight different Blazers saw at least 20 minutes of action in the contest with nine different players scoring at least six points. UAB's 25 assists were the most inagamesince2018. Four Blazers finished with at least four assists.
MAKING HIMSELF KNOWN
Eric Gaines had a career night when the Blazers defeated Presbyterian (Nov. 16). The LSU transfer matched his previous career high of 16 points while shooting7-for-11 from the fieldand2-for-2from three. He dished out a career-best 10 assists for his first collegiate double-double. Gaines did not stop there. The Lithonia, Georgia native made an impact in all facets of the game with four rebounds, three steals and three blocks.
ANDY KENNEDY IN MTE'S
Andy Kennedy is looking to capture his fifth multi-team event title as a head coach. In 2005, Kennedy led Cincinnati to a Las Vegas Holiday Classic title, defeating future Final Four team LSU in the final. He then led Ole Miss to the 2007 San Juan Shootout crown, sinking DePaul, LaSalle and then-No. 15 Clemson. In 2013, Kennedy and Ole Miss defeated Georgia Tech, coached by current USF coach Brian Gregory, and Penn State for the Barclays Center Classic title. Kennedy and the Rebels secured the Emerald Coast Classic in 2014 with victories over then-No. 22 Creighton and Cincinnati.

The Blazers have shown a plethora of scoring options in 2022-23. Seven different Blazers have already finished in double figures in a game this season, including Jordan Walker, Eric Gaines, KJ Buffen, Ledarrius Brewer, Javian Davis, Tavin Lovan and Trey Jemison.
