Balanced Effort Leads UAB MBB Past USF in Sunshine Slam

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – UAB men's basketball (3-1) used a balanced attack to sink South Florida (0-5) in the opening round of the Sunshine Slam by a score of 80-65. The Blazers advance to tomorrow's championship game where they will face Georgia.

The Blazers got going on the offensive end early. Each team scored on each of their first three possessions. UAB scored 14 points over the first four minutes of the game, including five from Ledarrius Brewer.

UAB stretched the lead out to double digits with 10 minutes to go in the first half after back-to-back dunks from Ty Brewer. The Bulls fought back, cutting the UAB lead to just four after a quick 7-0 run.

The Blazers led by just five at the half. Jordan Walker scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half and Ledarrius Brewer added eight.

UAB scored the first five points of the second half to push the lead back to double digits. The Blazers extended the advantage to 17 after nine minutes of the second half, led by KJ Buffen and Javian Davis.

South Florida would not go away quietly as Tyler Harris and Selton Miguel led the Bulls on a 13-2 run to but the lead to just six. That would be as close as the contest would get, however. UAB outscored USF 16-7 over the last six minutes to take the 80-65 victory.

NOTES

UAB is the first team to score more than 68 points against South Florida during the 2022-23 season.
Javian Davis finished with 14 points, his highest total as a Blazer, and grabbed eight rebounds, including five offensive boards. He went 8-for-9 from the free throw line.
Davis has finished in double figures in each of the last three games.
KJ Buffen added 10 points and seven rebounds, marking his third-straight game in double figures.
Ledarrius Brewer scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds while shooting 4-for-8 from three.
