Big Second Half Leads UAB MBB to Sunshine Slam Crown

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jordan Walker scored 19 of his 30 points in the second half to lead UAB (4-1) to a 87-73 win over Georgia (4-2).

Trey Jemison scored six of the Blazers' first eight points. The Blazers jumped out to an early 15-8 lead over the Bulldogs after five minutes. Georgia answered right back with a 12-2 run to take the lead before the under-12 media timeout.

Georgia was able to maintain its lead throughout the first half, extending it to as many as seven on multiple occasions. UAB fought back to take a 41-40 lead with 30 seconds remaining in the first period on a Ty Brewer jumper, but Justin Hill's layup with just a few seconds on the clock gave the Bulldogs a one-point advantage at the break.

The Blazers jumped all over the Bulldogs to start the second half. After the Bulldogs scored the first two points of the half, the Blazers went on a 10-0 run to take control of the contest.

After 11 minutes, UAB extended the lead to double figures for the first time as Eric Gaines knocked down a pair of free throws to make 63-53. Georgia cut the lead to eight on the next possession, but Jordan Walker's three pointer made it an 11-point game and Georgia could not respond.

Walker scored 14 points over the final 10 minutes of the game to help the Blazers pull away late. The Blazers led by as many as 18 in the final minutes, taking the Sunshine Slam Beach Bracket championship by a score of 87-73 over Georgia.

NOTES

UAB's last win over an SEC opponent was in 2010 vs. Arkansas.
Jordan Walker recorded his fifth-career 30+ point game. He trails only Andy Kennedy (7) in the UAB record books.
Walker finished with 30 points, four rebounds, five assists and five steals. His five steals match a career-best.
Eric Gaines finished with 14 points, six rebounds and eight assists.
The win gives UAB its first MTE title since 2019.
Andy Kennedy picks up his fifth MTE title as a head coach and first since 2014.
KJ Buffen finished in double figures for the fourth-straight game with 11 points.
UAB finished with a season-low seven turnovers.
The Blazers were out-rebounded for the first time during the 2022-23 season.
