Pair of Second-Half Goals Pushes Georgia State Past UAB 3-1

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's soccer team allowed two decisive goals late in the second half in a 3-1 loss to Georgia State on Tuesday night at BBVA Field.
After entering the halftime break tied at 1-1, the Blazers (2-6) conceded a penalty kick in the 75th minute, allowing the Panthers to jump ahead 2-1. UAB goalkeeper Seth Torman guessed correctly on Georgia State's George Proctor's penalty kick, but Proctor's shot sailed just by Torman's outstretched hands into the right side of the net.
Georgia State (7-2) then added to its lead just over a minute later when Salar Faryar tapped in a low cross from Carlos Luna, pushing the game to its final margin at 3-1.
After Georgia State struck first in the seventh minute, junior Zak Mohamed helped the Blazers answer in the 33rd minute, being brought down in the box after making a driving run down the right flank. Senior Nathaniel St. Louis then stepped to the spot to fire home his second goal off a penalty kick this season. St. Louis paces UAB with five goals scored in 2021.
UAB built on its momentum from St. Louis' goal early in the second half, firing five shots within the first 25 minutes of the second stanza. UAB's best chance of the second half came off a free kick in the 68th minute, which junior midfielder Teodor Thorvaldsen had pushed just over the bar when his shot headed goalward.
Sophomore forward Tyrell Price and midfielder Heath Flathau both also had shots blocked from just a few yards outside the box in the 70th minute.
The Green and Gold fired 12 shots, including eight attempts in the second half. Five of UAB's 12 shots were on target. St. Louis led UAB with three shots, two shots on goal and a goal.
UAB will return to the pitch on Sunday when the Blazers travel to Lexington, Kentucky, for a Conference USA matchup at No. 10 Kentucky.
