Guthrie Adds Pierce, Armistead to Roster

BIRMINGHAM – UAB softball head coach Joe Guthrie announced the signing of MaKenna Pierce and Tyler Armistead on Tuesday afternoon.
Pierce, a transfer from Southern Miss, appeared in 48 games in her three seasons with the Golden Eagles, making 19 starts in the circle.
During the 2021 season, the 5-foot-8 sophomore from Daphne, Ala., made 19 appearances with seven starts, recording a 3.43 ERA in 69.1 innings pitched with 51 strikeouts.
"MaKenna is an outstanding pitcher and person and comes from a great family," Guthrie said. "We want to keep in-state pitching talent here. We're extremely happy that she will help provide leadership to UAB."
Armistead is a graduate transfer who played four years at the University of Georgia. The 5-foot-8 Butler, Ala., native, appeared in 107 games, making 43 starts as a Bulldog, primarily as a designated hitter and additionally in the outfield.
Her breakout season for UGA came during the 2019 season, when, as a sophomore, Armistead made 49 appearances and 34 starts for the Bulldogs. She finished the season batting .252 with 13 RBIs and 27 hits.
"Tyler's an outstanding athlete that comes from another great Alabama family," Guthrie said.
"Tyler has seen what right looks like at a high-level program. I'm very excited to see what her athleticism and leadership brings to the Blazers."
Pierce and Armistead join Alyssa Aguilar as UAB's three off-season roster additions.
Aguilar, an incoming freshman from Burbank, Calif., signed with the Blazers on June 2.
"Alyssa is a very bright young lady," Guthrie said. "I'm very impressed with her maturity. On the softball field, she has a variety of tools. She has been well-coached at the travel ball level. We're excited to see her develop in Birmingham."
