UAB Baseball Splits Series Opener at Middle Tennessee

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — The UAB baseball team split the series-opening doubleheader with Middle Tennessee on Friday at Reese Smith Jr. Field. The Blazers took game one, 4-2, but fell in extra innings in the second game, 5-2.
The Blazers move to 13-25, 6-12 C-USA and Middle Tennessee goes to 19-17-1, 8-9-1 C-USA on the season.
GAME ONE – UAB 4, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 2
Riley Davis (3-3) picked up the win, tossing his third complete game of the season with eight strikeouts. Aaron Brown (5-3) picked up the loss after going 6.2 innings and allowing four runs.
After two scoreless innings, UAB got on the board first with three runs in the third. John Marc Mullins led off with a single up the middle. Jess Davis drove Mullins in two batters later. Chandler Simpson reached on a walk and was brought home, along with J. Davis, on a base hit from Colton Schultz.
Middle Tennessee threatened in the fifth with their first hit of the game with two outs to put a runner at second. The Blazers were able to get out of the inning with a pop-out to Mullins at shortstop.
With bases loaded and two outs, Brett Coker hit a single to bring in two runs to cut the lead to one, 3-2.
UAB answered in the seventh. Joseph Kiel led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Leo Harris. Kiel came home on base hit from J. Davis, his second of the game, for the 4-2 advantage.
R. Davis came back out in the bottom of the seventh and closed out the game by retiring the side for the 4-2 victory.
GAME TWO – UAB 2, MIDDLE TENNESSEE 5
Tyler O'Clair started in game two, going seven innings with eight strikeouts and allowed no earned runs. Brady Greene (3-2) got the loss after pitching .2 innings in the eighth and gave up the go-ahead run. David Zoz (5-0) picked up the win after coming in during the seventh inning.
Middle Tennessee came out and took the early 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly from JT Mabry.
Ian Ladner led off the top of the second with his second home run of the season to tie the game at one.
The Blue Raiders added a run in the fourth to take the 2-1 lead.
Simpson hit a two-out single in the top of the seventh. In the next at-bat Schultz sent a double into left center bringing in Simpson from first to tie the game at two.
With runners on first and second, Middle Tennessee's Briggs Rutter sent the ball over the left field wall for the walk-off three-run home run in the eighth inning to take game two, 5-2.
