UAB Baseball Edged by Florida Atlantic in Series Finale, 5-3

BIRMINGHAM — Florida Atlantic used a four-run ninth inning to top UAB baseball, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Young Memorial Field.
With the win, the Owls forced the four-game series split with the Blazers. UAB falls to 12-23, 5-11 C-USA and Florida Atlantic moves to 18-18, 7-9 C-USA on the season.
Right-handed pitcher Javi Rivera (4-0) went the distance for the Owls, allowing three runs on six hits. Brady Greene (3-1) picked up the loss after pitching 0.2 innings, giving up the go-ahead run in the ninth.
The Blazers scored first in the bottom of the fifth. Zack Davis leadoff with a single up the middle. He was brought in the next at-bat on a J Paul Fullerton double to left center.
In the sixth, the Green and Gold extended its lead to two. Pate Fullerton drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a Jess Davis sacrifice bunt. Freshman Chandler Simpson sent the team's second double of the game down the left field line to score Pate Fullerton for the 2-0 advantage.
Florida Atlantic brought in its first run of the day in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Bobby Morgensen. The Owls scored four runs on two hits in the top of the ninth to take the lead, 5-2.
Davis drew a one-out walk in the ninth and advanced to second on an Ian Ladner pinch-hit single. John Marc Mullins came to the plate as the tying run and delivered a double to score Davis and move Ladner to third. The UAB rally came up short and fell by a final tally of 5-3.
Up next, UAB heads to Starkville, Miss. for a midweek matchup against No. 3 Mississippi State. First pitch at Dudy Noble Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
