UAB Softball Sweeps Doubleheader with UTEP

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB softball team opened Conference USA play at Mary Bowers Field 2-0, taking the first two games of its four-game series with UTEP.
The Blazers (17-15, 4-2 C-USA) started the day with a come-from-behind 4-1 victory in the first game, before finishing with a 3-2 win in game two over the Miners (7-15, 2-4 C-USA).
Faith Hegh had a team-high 3 RBIs on the day, while Sierra Frazier extended her hit streak to 13 games.
Parker Conrad and Jaycee Cook each earned victories in the circle, with Cook recording her fiftieth career strikeout in game two.
GAME ONE – UAB 4, UTEP 1
After a scoreless first inning, the Miners took a 1-0 lead after a homerun from infielder Bryanna Molina.
The Blazers were able to tie up the game in the second inning with a Sam Bean RBI single that scored Taylor Watford.
In the fifth, Jenna Olszewski doubled to center field, bringing home pinch runner Makalah Mitchell, and giving the Green and Gold a 2-1 lead.
Analyse Petree was able to add on another run in the inning with an RBI groundout sacrifice to score Sierra Frazier and give UAB a 3-1 advantage.
Olivia Valbak plated the final run of the game for the Blazers in the sixth, hitting an RBI double that scored pinch runner Chloe Bahruth.
Amy Woodham, who started the game in the circle, went four innings, giving up one run, four hits and striking out five.
Conrad (5-3) earned the victory with three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits and striking out four batters.
GAME TWO - UAB 3, UTEP 2
In the second game of the doubleheader, UAB got behind early again.
UTEP plated one run in the second and one in the third, going up 2-0.
Faith Hegh was able to break the game open for the Blazers in the bottom of the third with a bases-clearing double that scored Petree, Frazier and Olszewski, giving the Blazers a 3-2 lead.
UAB was held scoreless for the next three innings, while Jaycee Cook kept the Miners off the board.
Cook (4-2) pitched a complete game, giving up just four hits, one earned run and striking out four batters.
This was the third time in her career that the Mansfield, Texas, native has pitched a complete game.
UAB will play the final two-games of the series against UTEP tomorrow with another doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
