BIRMINGHAM – Playing in its first tournament of the spring, the UAB women's golf team placed 12th at the FAU Paradise Invitational hosted by Florida Atlantic at Boca Lago Country Club.
UAB (304-307-309 = 920, +56) was led by freshman Emilia Smith who finished in a tie for 36th place at +10. Smith opened the tournament with a one under 71, and then shot 77-78 for a total of 226, her second lowest collegiate 54-hole score.
"We didn't have the performance we were looking for this week at FAU," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "We were very rusty and definitely have things to work on before our next event in Jacksonville. Our conference championship is in Florida and by playing at FAU and UNF, it allows us to be able to play and prepare for Florida golf we will see again in April. I am proud of Emilia for shooting a 71 in the first round. She has the ability to go even lower moving forward and I am excited to see what she will do moving forward."
Fellow freshman Shelly Chen finished two strokes behind Smith with a +12 and tied for 40th. Chen (76-77-75 = 228) had her lowest round of +3 on the final 18 holes.
Karlee Allen and Tia Teiniketo each shot +17 and tied for 52nd overall. Caroline Waldrop rounded out UAB's lineup with a 68th place finish.
Michigan State won the team title at -6, and was followed by Maryland (-5), South Florida (-3), Vanderbilt (-3) and North Florida (+5).
Individually, Virunpat Olankitkunchai of Maryland ran away with the title by shooting -11 and winning the tournament by six strokes.
The Blazers return to the course next week, February 21-22, at the First Coast Classic hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
