BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's golf team is currently in seventh place after the first round and a half of the First Coast Classic in Jacksonville. Due to inclement weather, play was suspended in the second round and will resume on Tuesday morning.
The Blazers shot a 300 (+12) in the opening round and are currently +13 overall. UAB was through 12 holes in the second round and were +1 until play was suspended. Troy (-3) is currently leading the field, followed by Arkansas State (E), North Florida (E), FIU (+4), and South Alabama (+5) to round out the top five.
"I am proud of the way the team fought back today," head coach Ryan Ashburn said. "I am very proud of Karlee. She had a great first rounf and continued that into the second round. We are starting to trend in the right direction and I think if we can continue our good play in the second round and go low tomorrow we can put ourselves in contention."
Leading the Blazers is freshman Karlee Allen. Allen shot a career low 72 (E) in the first round which put her tied for 12th. Through 11 holes in the second round, Allen is currently +1 and in a tie for 14th.
Senior Tia Teiniketo shot a 76 (+4) in the first round which placed her in a tie for 36th. Through nine holes of today's second round action, she is -1 and has climbed 13 spots to be tied for 23rd.
Freshman Shelly Chen is UAB's third finisher and is currently tied for 27th. In the first round she shot a 77 (+5) which put her tied for 40th, but like Teiniketo, she is one under through nine holes in the second round.
Senior Stephenie Fowler (+5, T32) and freshman Emilia Smith (+9, T52) round out UAB's efforts on Monday.
Playing as an individual, Lexie Dawson is tied for 35th (+6).
Continuous second round play, plus the final 18 holes will resume Tuesday at 7:45 a.m. EST. Click here for live results and also be sure to follow @UAB_WGOLF on Twitter and Instagram for updates.
