BIRMINGHAM – Led by a top 20 finish from freshman Shelly Chen, the UAB women's golf team tied for seventh place at the First Coast Classic hosted by North Florida in Jacksonville.
UAB shot 897 (+33) for the tournament and had their low round come on the final 18 holes with a collective 298.
"We did some good things this week in Jacksonville but we still have a lot to improve on," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "It will be nice to have some time to prepare for our next competition which will take place at a course we are familiar with in Birmingham. We should expect to play very well and card some low scores."
Chen tied for 19th overall and improved by three strokes every round (77-74-71) en route to shooting 222 (+6) overall.
Senior Tia Teiniketo and freshman Emilia both tied for 24th by shooting +10. Teiniketo shot a 76-74-76, while Smith recovered nicely from an opening round 80 to shoot 74-72 down the stretch.
Freshman Karlee Allen finished in a tie for 40th (+15), while Stephenie Fowler rounded out UAB's efforts in a tie for 51st (+17). Playing as an individual, Lexie Dawson finished 53rd at +18.
UNF (-6) won the tournament by 16 strokes over Troy (+10) who finished second. Individually, Carolina Andrade (-6) of FIU took first place by one stroke.
The Blazers are now off for nearly a month and return to the course on March 15-16 to host the UAB Tournament at Greystone Country Club.
