UAB Concludes Nonconference Slate Wednesday Against Mississippi Valley State

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will look to move to a perfect 8-0 in Bartow Arena this season when the Blazers host Mississippi Valley State to conclude their nonconference schedule on Wednesday night. Wednesday's tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. and will stream live on CUSA.tv.
UAB (9-3) suffered a narrow 65-59 defeat to West Virginia on Saturday at Legacy Arena. The Blazers held a three-point halftime lead before the Mountaineers (10-1) stormed back in the game's final eight minutes to earn the road victory.
The Blazers have won all seven of their games played in Bartow Arena this season by double digits. UAB holds a perfect 8-0 record against Mississippi Valley State, recording double-digit victories in all eight of those previous matchups.
UAB LATELY
UAB held a nine-point lead over West Virginia with less than eight minutes remaining in Saturday's contest, but the Mountaineers mounted a comeback behind a 23-8 run to close out the game. For the first time this season, UAB could not hold onto a halftime lead, moving to 7-1 in games this season when the Blazers hold an advantage after the first 20 minutes. Center Trey Jemison shined brightly inside the newly renovated Legacy Arena, logging his team-best third double-double of the season behind a game-high 12 rebounds while also chipping in with 10 points. Guard Jordan Walker paced the Green and Gold with 13 points and four assists in the setback to WVU.
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE LATELY
The Delta Devils are off to a slow start in 2021-22, opening the season 0-9 in nonconference play. Mississippi Valley State, however, has played only two games at home, already traveling to New York, California, Tennessee, Alabama, Arizona and Louisiana so far this season. Two Delta Devils average double figures this season, highlighted by junior forward Robert Carpenter's team-high 16.6 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. Sophomore guard Caleb Hunter ranks second on the MVSU roster by averaging 12.8 points per game.
COMMON OPPONENTS -- MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE
The Blazers and Delta Devils share two common opponents this season, both of which are conference mates of Mississippi Valley State in the SWAC. UAB has defeated both Alabama A&M and Grambling State by double digits in Bartow Arena this season.
NOTHING BUT "NET"
UAB's victory at Saint Louis not only marked the Blazers' first true road victory of the season, but it also served as UAB's first Quadrant I NET win of the 2021-22 season. NET, or the NCAA Evaluation Tool, released its first rankings of the 2021-22 season on Monday, Dec. 6, which had the Blazers sitting at a then program-best No. 35. The Blazers' previous high in the ranking system came in Andy Kennedy's first season back in Birmingham when UAB reached No. 48 in the NET ratings. UAB has reached as high as No. 28 in the ranking system this season and currently sits at No. 53 in the most recent ratings.
PICKING POCKETS
With 23 steals in Nov. 14's win over Rhodes College, the Blazers tied a school record for steals in a single game. UAB tallied 15 of its 23 steals in the first half, helping the Blazers tie their single-game steals record for the first time since 2005. UAB has recorded double-digit steal tallies in nine of its 12 games so far this season, posting 12 or more eight times. The Blazers rank first nationally with 12.8 steals per game and first nationally with 153 total steals.
EFFICIENCY IS KEY
In 2020-21, the UAB defense led the Blazers to a 22-7 record and a league-best 13 C-USA victories. So far this season, both the offense and defense have fueled UAB's success, ranking second in the nation in turnover margin (9.1) while ranking 29th nationally with 80.8 points per game on offense. The Blazers also rank first nationally with 247 total turnovers forced this season.
"LET THE BIG DOG EAT"
Center Trey Jemison has been a force underneath the basket over his past nine games, grabbing 83 boards while also chipping in with 74 points. Jemison has recorded three double-doubles during that stretch, including one in UAB's win over New Mexico, pulling down 12 rebounds to go along with 11 points. Jemison's 22 total points and 19 total rebounds in the Las Vegas Invitational helped him earn All-Tournament Team honors.

Blazer men's basketball games are set to air on 100.5 ESPN JOX 2 with David Crane and Murry Bartow on the call.
In addition, Crane will host Blazer Sportsline every Tuesday beginning Dec. 28. The show takes place live from Iron City Grill in downtown Birmingham and features men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy and women's basketball head coach Randy Norton.
