UAB Battles West Virginia to Open Saturday's Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Basketball Classic at Legacy Arena
12/17/2021 3:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will go for its fifth straight win Saturday when the Blazers host Bob Huggins' West Virginia Mountaineers at Legacy Arena. Tipoff at Legacy Arena is set for 4 p.m. and will be carried live on CBS Sports Network.
Saturday's game against West Virginia (9-1) will not only mark the first game of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Basketball Classic, but it will also mark the first college basketball game played in the newly renovated Legacy Arena. The Blazers are 7-0 in contests played in Birmingham this season, winning each matchup by at least 14 points.
UAB's (9-2) last matchup in Legacy Arena came before the facility was renovated, which is when the Blazers dropped a tight 75-71 decision to No. 7 Auburn in overtime. The Tigers went on to make the Final Four later that season.
A win over the Mountaineers would not only mark UAB's 10th win of the season, but it'd also mark its first win over a Big 12 opponent since the Blazers upset third-seeded Iowa State in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
Miles College and Savannah State will conclude Saturday's doubleheader following UAB's game against West Virginia. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

THE MENTOR AND THE MENTEE
UAB head coach Andy Kennedy and West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins share a longtime friendship. Kennedy was an assistant coach under Huggins from 2001-05 at Cincinnati, which is where Kennedy got his first head coaching position for the 2005-06 season before coaching the next 12 seasons at Ole Miss. A UAB win on Saturday would mark AK's first win over Huggins. Huggins is 2-0 against Kennedy in the two coaches' respective head coaching careers.
NOTHING BUT "NET"
UAB's victory at Saint Louis not only marked the Blazers' first true road victory of the season, but it also served as UAB's first Quadrant I NET win of the 2021-22 season.
