11/20/2021 11:30:00 AM | Men's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will look to move to 4-0 in Bartow Arena when they host in-state foe Alabama A&M on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff in Birmingham is set for 2 p.m. and will stream live on ESPN+.
UAB (3-1) holds a perfect 13-0 record against the Bulldogs in the all-time series history, winning each game by double digits. The Blazers most recently defeated the Bulldogs 74-52 back on Nov. 11, 2019. Current Blazer guard Tavin Lovan paced UAB with 21 points and five steals in the dominant victory in Bartow Arena.
The Blazers will also look to avenge their 66-63 Thursday road defeat at SEC foe South Carolina. UAB is 6-1 following a loss during the Andy Kennedy era, which includes a 102-77 season-opening victory over UNC Asheville earlier in November.
UAB LATELY
UAB dropped its first game of the 2021-22 season when its roaring second-half comeback came up just short at South Carolina on Thursday. The Blazers trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half before twice cutting the game to just a single point in the game's closing minutes. Graduate guard Michael Ertel and junior point guard Jordan Walker both had looks to give UAB a late lead, but their attempts would not fall. UAB forced its SEC foe into 22 turnovers and collected 14 steals, making it four straight games to open the season where UAB has tallied a double-digit steal tally.
ALABAMA A&M LATELY
Alabama A&M's slate with many nonconference road games continues on Sunday when the Bulldogs make the short trip to Birmingham. After opening the season with an 82-73 win over Tennessee State, the Bulldogs have opened their 12-game road swing with back-to-back defeats. Jacksonville State and Cincinnati both defended their home courts with a pair of 23-point victories over the Bulldogs. Forward Jalen Johnson leads Alabama A&M's offense with 19.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Johnson poured in 30 of A&M's 66 points in their loss at Cincinnati on Tuesday.
COMMON OPPONENTS
The Blazers and Bulldogs share three common opponents this season -- Western Kentucky, Mississippi Valley State and Grambling State. Following Alabama A&M's game in Birmingham, the Bulldogs will make the trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for a midweek road battle at WKU.
