BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer head coach Erica Demers has announced that five newcomers have signed on to join the Blazers. UAB welcomes Abbey Burns, Hannah Clark, Olivia Mickey, Claire Rea, Brielle Rochester to the soccer family.
"We are very excited for our 2022 class that our staff worked hard to put together," said Demers. "An important aspect in our recruiting process is searching for players from all over and this group brings diversity to our team. Along with this, our four field players bring loads of versatility which will allow us to find the best position for them on the field."
Abbey Burns | Adelaide, South Australia | Marryatville
Burns becomes the first UAB women's soccer Australian player on the roster. She ranked eighth for the Women's National Premier League SA Player of the Year. She was called up to training with the Adelaide United Women's Team in the W-League.
Demers on Burns: "Abbey will be the first Australian in our program, and we are thrilled to have such a great player and person adding to our roster. Abbey is playing at an extremely high level and has faced and played with many great players in preparation for UAB. Abbey's versatility will allow us to move her along the backline and help add to our overall strong defensive unit. Very happy to have Abbey next Fall wearing the Green and Gold!"
Hannah Clark | Hendersonville, Tenn. | Hendersonville | Tennessee Soccer Club
Clark, who can play left back and defensive center mid, is coming off a year where she was named District 10 AAA Defensive MVP, All-District and District 11-A All-District. She led the Commandos to the 2020 District and Regional championships.
Demers on Clark: "We are thrilled to have Hannah join our Blazer Family next Fall. Hannah is a dominant left footed player that has a high willingness to create an attack from a starting defensive position. Hailing from Tennessee, she had her club career at Tennessee Soccer Club. We are excited to have Hannah with our Blazer program and watch her compete and grow throughout her career."
Olivia Mickey | Satellite Beach, Fla. | Satellite Beach | Orlando Pride
A 5-10 keeper, Mickey held Satellite Beach's opponent to 56% of its scoring average. For her career, she averaged six clean sheets per season.
Demers on Mickey: "Olivia will add to an already great "GK Union" that Coach John has created here at UAB. She has worked with some great coaches playing within the Orlando Pride club and will bring in an infectious work rate and deep knowledge to the position. We look forward to her working with Eve, Anika and Spencer and to push one another even more and grow in the position."

Claire Rea | Ottawa, Ontario | St. Peter Catholic | Ottawa South United
Rea becomes the fourth Canadian player on the roster. A former Athlete of the Year, Rea led her team to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations bronze medal and was a member of the Ontario Provincial Team.
Demers on Rea: "We are excited to bring another Canadian to our program! We watched Claire play for quite some time and knew from the first time watching her that we wanted her to be a Blazer. Claire will find her time higher up the field, but as previously mentioned her best position is multiple positions. We are looking forward to Claire's career at UAB."

Brielle Rochester | Libertyville, Ill. | Libertyville | Eclipse Select

Rochester was named ECNL Girls All-Midwest Conference U-17 Second Team this past season. A two-sport athlete, Rochester set the Libertyville school record in the mile.
Demers on Rochester: "Bri is coming from a great club up north, Eclipse SC. Our process with Bri has been on-going, but once sports started to slowly and careful open after COVID, we had the privilege of watching Bri again, and we loved the amount of growth we saw in her! Having that grow mindset is something we strive for within our program daily and we knew Bri would be a great addition because of this character piece to her. Very excited to have Bri start with us and add to the depth in our midfield positions."
