Blazers Win Three Flights Mercer Gridiron Classic

MACON, Ga. – The UAB women's tennis team opened the 2021 Fall season by winning three flights at the Mercer Gridiron Classic this past weekend.
Alexandra da Silva was champion in Flight D singles and the teams of Sydney Clarke and Maggie White (Flight B) and Vanessa Mellynchuk and da Silva (Flight C) took the doubles crowns.
da Silva won all four of her matches in straight sets. She defeated Svetlana Teterina of North Georgia 7-5, 6-4, Melody Cantrell from Kennesaw State 6-1, 6-1, Gonzalez of Point College 6-0, 6-0 and Balsen Kaya from Jacksonville State 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
Additionally, Adela Wasserbauerova and Maggie White reached the finals of A2 and B2, respectively. Jana Hecking won the North draw of A1 and Annalisa Smith won the Northwest draw of C1.
Clark and Maggie White battled through their first three matches, winning each contest 6-4 over teams from Alabama State, Savannah and ETSU. In the finals, they defeated Zuzana Pavelekova and Ella Tuomela from Jacksonville State 6-2.
In Flight C doubles, Wasserbauerova and Smith received a first found bye and dominated the quarterfinals with a 6-0 win over Caroline Lewis and Nicole Katzarkov from Savannah. In the semifinals, they defeated Troy's Olivia Elliott and Michelle Ncube 6-4.
On the bottom half of the bracket, Mellynchuk and da Silva defeated Gabriela Duca and Bouchaala 6-4, Mercer's Lekha Varudandi and Ashley Popham 7-6 to reach the semifinals. The Blazer duo defeated ETSU's Emilia Alfaro and Daniela Rivera 6-4 to set up an all UAB finals.
In a close match, Mellynchuk and da Silva came away with a 7-5 victory to earn the flight title.
Overall, UAB finished 18-8 in singles and 13-2 win doubles.
The next match will be this weekend at the Samford Hidden Duals held Oct. 8-10.
