UAB Participates at ITA Southern Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The UAB women's tennis team participated in the ITA Southern Regionals this past weekend. The field also included players from Alabama, Alcorn State, Auburn, Jacksonville State, Louisiana Lafayette, Louisiana Monroe, Louisiana Tech, LSU, McNeese State, Mississippi State, Northwestern State, Ole Miss, Samford, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy and Tulane.
In singles, Vanessa Mellynchuk advanced to the Round of 16 in the qualifiers, winning her first three matches. In the main draw, she jumped out to a 6-3 first set win over Adeline Flach from Auburn before a 6-0, 6-2 setback.
Jana Hecking, Adela Wasserbauerova and Mackenzie White each were automatically in the main draw. Hecking was defeated by Alabama's Anna Parkhomenko 6-0, 6-2. Wasserbauerova and White each lost in three sets. White battled No. 12 Mackenzie Clark from Tulane for three sets, but fell 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-1. Wasserbauerova and Samford's Alexis Lopez split the first two sets but it was Lopez that came out on top 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
In the consolation match, Wasserbauerova defeated Marta Falcetto from Miss State 2-6, 7-5, 10-7.
Wasserbauerova and Mackenzie White were 8-7 (8-6) winners over Auburn's Anastasia Astakhova and Carolyn Ansari in the Round of 64 doubles. In the Round of 32, they were defeated by the No. 8 team from LSU, Safiya Carrington and Maggie Cubitt 8-1.
No. 11 Sydney Clarke/Maggie White received a first round bye, but were defeated by Ludmila Kareisova and Kelsey Mize from Ole Miss 8-6.
Alexandra da Silva and Mellynchuk opened with an 8-7 win over ULM's Oleksandra Balaba and Madalina Grigoriu. They lost in the Round of 32 to
Elysia Pool and Anaëlle Leclercq-Ficher from Ole Miss 8-5.
The Blazers return to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 29 for the Roberta Allison Fall Classic.
