Cokley Shines in The Basketball Tournament

Former UAB Blazer Chris Cokley recently participated in The Basketball Tournament. TBT, as the event is known, is a 24-team single-elimination tournament with a $1 million winner take all prize. The entire event, which runs from July 4-14, takes place at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. All players and staff were quarantined and completed ample COVID-19 testing prior to the start of the games. The made for TV only games, which aired on ESPN, were fanless.
TBT utilizes college rules, however there are four 9-minute quarters, each team gets four timeouts per game and each player gets six fouls. International rules on basket interference (except on foul shots) apply. All games feature the Elam Ending, the end of game format made famous during the 2020 NBA All-Star Game, which eliminates the game clock after a certain point and features teams playing to a target score.
Cokley was a member of Herd That, a team consisting of former Conference USA players Steve Browning, Jon Elmore, OT Elmore, Ryan Taylor and Rondale Watson from Marshall as well as Jacorey Williams from Middle Tennessee. Additional teammates Santino Ditrapano (Charleston), Ryan Luther (Pittsburgh) and Zach Smith (Texas Tech) rounded out the roster.
Herd That was a No. 23 seed in the tournament.
In Round 1, Cokley scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds in an 80-65 upset victory over No. 5 Peoria All-Stars.
In the Super 16 round, Cokley dominated the game against No. 7 seed The Money Team, scoring a game-high 32 points on 12-for-20 shooting and grabbing a team-high seven rebounds in Herd That's 102-99 win. The squad closed the game on a 16-2 run. For his efforts, he was awarded the TBT Player of the Game.
Herd That's run came to an end after falling to No. 2 seed Overseas Elite 93-76 in the quarterfinal round. Cokley finished with 17 points.
The championship game will be played tomorrow pitting No. 22 seed Sideline Cancer against No. 4 seed Golden Eagles.
