BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team will play host to in-state rival No. 20 Alabama for a 6 p.m. midweek battle at Regions Field on Tuesday. The matchup will serve as the front end of the annual home-and-home between the Blazers and the Crimson Tide.
UAB this season
UAB (7-8, 0-0 C-USA) comes into the contest on the heels of a tight weekend series with Toledo. After dropping game one, the Blazers used a seven-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to down the Rockets in game two before falling shy in the rubber match decided in extras. UAB is now 6-3 in its last nine games.
On the week, freshman infielder Chandler Simpson's seasonal development at the plate continued to progress as he batted .538 over four games. Despite lining up in the nine hole throughout the week, the Atlanta native picked up multiple hits in three of the four games. Simpson went 7-for-13 with four RBI, four runs scored and five stolen bases over the span, including a pair of game-tying singles that led to a game two win over Toledo and pushed game three to extra innings.
This season, senior utility man Colton Schultz has had the most production at the dish with a .300 batting average after tallying 18 hits, four doubles, three homeruns, 16 RBI and 11 runs scored. Senior lefty Austin Bohannon still holds the top ERA of the starters on the pitching staff at 2.66 with nine strikeouts in five starts and 20.1 innings of work.
Standout grad transfer closer Mac McCarty continues to deliver when called upon, still among the elite closers in the country with nearly flawless performances to date. The Port Orchard, Wash., native is one of nine qualifying pitchers in the NCAA that boasts an unblemished ERA. The sidewinder also currently sits atop the nation with a 0.31 WHIP and 1.69 hits allowed per nine innings. Through that success on the hill, the right hander has tallied five saves to lead the conference and rank seventh in the country in the category.
Scouting No. 20 Alabama
Alabama (15-1, 0-0 SEC) has gotten off to a hot start this season, winning its first 14 games. The Crimson Tide recently took its first loss of the season at the hands of Lipscomb, falling 3-2, but claimed the overall series with wins in the series opener and the rubber match.
Over the course of the season, Alabama has proven its merit as a defensive unit leading the SEC and ranking in the top 20 nationally in fielding percentage (.987) and double plays (14). The Tide also ranks 11th or higher in the NCAA in multiple categories at the plate such as hits (172), doubles (37), homeruns (21), runs scored (135), walks (93), on-base percentage (0.428) and slugging percentage (.506). On the hill, the Tide is 11th in the country in ERA (2.19) and 14th in WHIP (1.06).
Individually, Alabama also has a pitcher with a perfect ERA in freshman lefty Connor Prielipp, who's currently third in hits allowed per nine innings (2.14) and sixth in WHIP in the NCAA (0.52) to lead the SEC in both areas. Junior outfielder Tyler Gentry has led the Tide bats to date with a .434 batting average, 23 hits, five doubles, four homeruns, 20 RBI and 19 runs scored. Along with Gentry, senior utility man Brett Auerbach has been a spark for Alabama batting .379 to nationally rank 10th in doubles (8), 13th in runs scored (20) and 15th in steals as the latter leads the SEC.
The Crimson Tide currently holds a 49-24 advantage in the all-time series. The last few contests also belong to Alabama after a pair of one-run wins as UAB's last victory in the series came in a 6-4 home victory in 2018.
