Blazer Baseball Falls to No. 20 Alabama, 13-7

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB baseball team fell to No. 20 Alabama by a final tally of 13-7 on Tuesday night at Regions Field. After getting behind early, the Blazers fought back with three runs in the fifth and another four in the eighth, but were unable to complete the climb back.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Jess Davis led the Green and Gold at the plate, registering three hits, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning, in addition to a double. The Kearney, Mo., native picked up four RBI on the day.
Senior J Paul Fullerton along with juniors Caleb Floyd and Justin Wiley each recorded two base hits, with Fullerton and Wiley driving in one run apiece.
The Crimson Tide struck first in the top of the first inning as Brett Auerbach reached first on a walk before stealing second. With one out, Tyler Gentry rifled one over of the left field wall, plating Auerbach and putting Alabama up, 1-0.
Alabama scored again in the top of the third, loading the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch before Peyton Wilson walked to record an RBI and extend the Crimson Tide lead to 2-0. Kolby Robinson recorded a sacrifice fly to right, plating another Alabama run, before Jim Jarvis reached on an error, driving in a run and pushing the lead to 4-0. A base hit through the left side of the infield extended the Alabama advantage to 5-0 before the visitors plated two more runs on a double to right-center field for the sixth run of the frame.
The top of the fifth saw Alabama further its lead as Sam Praytor knocked a two-out, three-run home run over the left-field fence to put the Crimson Tide up, 10-0.
After Wiley reached on a fielder's choice and freshman Chandler Simpson walked in the bottom of the fifth, Jess Davis crushed a three-run home run over the left-field fence to put UAB on the scoreboard and cut the deficit to 10-3.
The Crimson Tide plated two more runs in the top half of the seventh as Drew Williamson grounded out to second and drove in a run before a single by T.J. Reeves sent another Crimson Tide baserunner to the plate, extending the Alabama lead to 12-3.
Alabama tacked on once again in the eighth, scoring a run on a single to left by Tate, putting the Crimson Tide up, 13-3.
Wiley drove in redshirt senior Zack Davis with a single through the left side in the bottom of the eighth, cutting into the UAB lead and making the score 13-4 before the Blazers notched another run on Simpson groundout to second, scoring senior Nathan Anthes. With two outs, Jess Davis scorched one through the right side of the infield to drive in Wiley and cut the deficit to seven, 13-6, just before J Fullerton drove in another run with a single through the right side, pulling UAB to within six with one inning left to play.
There was no movement on the scoreboard in the final frame for either side as Alabama closed out the game on top, 13-7.
Redshirt freshman righty Jonah Smith got the start on the mound for the Green and Gold, going 2.0 innings, striking out three and allowing one run while taking the loss, his first of the season.
