BIRMINGHAM – Before heading to El Paso for its Conference USA opening series, the UAB softball team will host Bryant University on Wednesday evening, March 11, at Mary Bowers Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
The Blazers (15-11) are coming off a 5-1 week and have won six of their last seven contests overall. Last week, UAB defeated North Alabama in Florence and then returned home to go 4-1 at the UAB Tournament with wins over Colgate (twice), Furman and Jacksonville.
Sierra Frazier and Jenna Olszewski each had three RBI last time out in a 9-5 win against Furman. Frazier continues to produce in the power categories as she leads the team in home runs (4), RBI (24), slugging (.610) doubles (9) and walks (11).
Amy Woodham paces the pitching staff with a 1.91 ERA and has thrown a team-high 62.1 innings. It has been pitching by committee though, as true freshman Jaycee Cook has a 5-1 record, while Emily Kachel returned after missing two weeks to strike out a career-high 11 batters in a 1-0 complete game victory against Jacksonville.
Bryant enters the contest with an overall record of 4-11, but is 3-3 in its last six games. Members of the Northeast Conference, Bryant is in the midst of an Alabama road trip. Following the game at UAB, the Bulldogs then play at Samford before heading to Tuscaloosa for a weekend tournament hosted by Alabama.
The game against Bryant will be UAB's second annual Ovarian Cancer Awareness Teal Game. For more information on the Geaux Teal initiative, click here.
