UAB Prepares for C-USA Championship

BIRMINGHAM – UAB (18-13, 9-9 C-USA) departs this morning for Frisco, Texas for the 2020 Conference USA Championship. The Blazers are a No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 seed UTSA (13-18, 7-11 C-USA) in the First Round of the tournament. The game will be on Wednesday, March 11 with an 8:30 p.m. tipoff time. The winner will face No. 2 seed WKU (20-10, 13-5 C-USA), who receives a first round bye, in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.
ABOUT THE 2020 AIR FORCE RESERVE CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP
Coverage of the first round will be available through ESPN+, while the four quarterfinal games will be available on affiliates of Stadium and Facebook. The semifinal games will be shown on CBS Sports Network at 1 p.m. and 3:30 pm (CT). CBS Sports Network will also broadcast the championship game on Saturday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
UAB IN THE CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP
2020 marks UAB's 25th appearance in the Conference USA Championship. The Blazers have won one tournament title in 2015 and have been to the finals two additional times. Last season, UAB fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Old Dominion 61-59. Overall, the Blazers are 22-23 in the league's tournament.
ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS
Jalen Benjamin was named to the 2020 Conference USA All-Freshman team as announced by the league on Monday. Benjamin finished the regular season averaging 12.1 points per game while making a team-best 52 3-pointers. A two-time Rookie of the Week, Benjamin has 18 double-figure scoring games this season. His career-high was a 29 point effort against Southern Miss when he was 9-of-18 from the field, including six 3-pointers. He also added six 3-pointers in the Blazers' home victory against Middle Tennessee.
UAB AND UTSA
The series began in 2014 when UTSA joined Conference USA. In total, the teams have met 10 times, with UAB winning six of the contests. Wednesday marks the second consecutive year the teams have met in the Conference USA Championship.
LAST TIME AGAINST UTSA
UTSA ended the game on a 20-2 run en route to a 66-59 comeback victory on March 1. Tyreek Scott-Grayson scored 18 points for UAB. Tavin Lovan added 13 points. Both pulled down eight rebounds. The NCAA's leading scorer Jhivvan Jackson scored 22 of his game-high 28 points in the second half for the Roadrunners. C-USA's second leading scorer Keaton Wallace added 18 for UTSA.
